FAIRFIELD, Calif. - After its third place finish in 2015, South No. 3 seed College of the Canyons made its return to the CCCAA State Women's Volleyball Championship Saturday another success with a sweep over North No. 2 Feather River, 25-16, 26-24, 25-20, in a quarterfinals match.
The Cougars (25-5) used a strong serve, including nine aces, and the hitting of both All-State selection Emily Burns (15 kills) and Caroline Page (10 kills, .455 attack percentage) to put away the Golden Eagles (26-6). Feather River was paced by Cyan Blackdeer, who had 15 kills and Madison Howard with 10 kills (.304).
"Canyons served us right off the floor, and we knew they were a good serving team going into the match," said Feather River head coach Sarah Ritchie. "For us, we just couldn't pass to save ourselves. This was one of my best teams ever at Feather River, so to see them work as hard as they did was gratifying. We deserved to make it to state."
Shayla Johnson (eight kills) and Demi Dawson led the COC serve brigade with three aces each. Canyons jumped out to a 16-7 lead in the first set and coasted to the 1-0 lead.In set 2, Canyons scored nine straight points on a single sideout with Dawson serving. COC led by as much as 14-5, but Feather River roared back on a long sideout with Megan Gallion. Blackdeer had two kills during the run and Feather River cut the lead to 19-17. FRC tied it twice at 22-22 and 24s each, but an error and a Page kill allowed the Cougars to take the set and a 2-0 games advantage.
In the third set, Feather River stayed close and knotted the set at 17-17. At that point, COC went on an 8-3 run, capping the sweep on a Johnson kill.
After three apperances at state in 2008, 2014 and this year, Feather River is still looking for its first state win (0-4 in matches).
