SAN MATEO BEATS WEST VALLEY TO REMAIN UNBEATEN AT HOME
Malia Koloamatangi had seven total blocks and eight kills as the College of San Mateo women's volleyball team maintained its undefeated home record with a 3-1 win over West Valley College Wednesday night.
Brittany Travis had 11 kills and Jade Tu added nine for the Bulldogs (10-5, 2-1 Coast North), who won by scores of 25-18, 24-26, 25-17, and 25-20. Samantha Johnson had 35 assists and Veronica Edhdami added 13 digs. The narrow second set loss marked the first time San Mateo has dropped a set at home. (The set record is now 18-1.) West Valley fell to 3-7, 0-3.
--Koloamatangi ranks No. 4 in the state in blocks per set with a 1.33 average.
Things will soon get a bit tougher at College Heights, however, as the Bulldogs host three of the state's top-ranked teams in succession – all in the Coast North, one of the toughest conferences in the state.
Defending state champion and currently fourth-ranked Cabrillo (Northern California's top team) visits San Mateo on Oct. 19, followed on Oct. 21 by No. 15 San Francisco and on Oct. 26 by No. 21 Hartnell (which gave the Bulldogs their only conference loss, in Salinas). All contests start at 6:30 p.m.
Before the home stand Coach Katie Goldhahn's team will visit Chabot (1-9, 0-3) in Hayward on Friday evening (Oct. 14).
Cabrillo and Hartnell currently lead the Coast North at 3-0, followed by San Mateo and CCSF at 2-1.
CSM's non-league losses have all been to ranked teams -- on the road: No. 5 Fresno (the Central Valley Conference leader), No. 20 Feather River (the Golden Valley leader), No. 17 American River, and a split with No. 14 San Joaquin Delta. San Mateo has been ranked as high as No. 16 in the state in this inaugural season.
