WALNUT, Calif. – The Cerritos College women's soccer team finished what their men's team started earlier in the day by taking the state soccer championship with a 2-0 win over previously unbeaten Santiago Canyon College on Sunday afternoon.
It is the third-straight title for the Falcons and fifth total. Each of the last three titles the Falcons shutout the Hawks.
Nayeli Requejo from Cerritos was named the Tournament MVP.
In the 50th minute, Ashley Anaya-Webb was fouled hard in the box and the Falcons were awarded a penalty kick. Requejo took the kick and scored into the back right corner for her 37th goal of the year.
Just three minutes later, Jazmin Aguas gave Cerritos a 2-0 lead after receiving a nice cross from Anaya-Webb.
The first half of play was fairly even as both teams had chances with Cerritos outscoring Santiago Canyon, 5-3.
Adrianna Salazar faced pressure from the Hawks but was only forced to make two saves.
Casey Pulido also made two saves for the Hawks.
