CSM SWEEPS 3 FOES FOR TOM MARTINEZ WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT TITLE
SAN MATEO -- Corryne Millett had her third double-double in as many days as College of San Mateo swept its own Tom Martinez Invitational Women's Basketball Tournament with a title-clinching 79-69 victory over Contra Costa Sunday. The 6-1 freshman (out of Douglas High in Nevada) scored 12 points and had ten rebounds in the finals and was selected as the tournament MVP.
The Bulldogs (9-2) led throughout the championship game after Sophia Leon's inaugural 3-pointer set the tone of an opening 6-point run. The freshman guard out of James Logan High scored 18 points.
Mariah Elzy (James Logan), CSM's other 6-foot front liner, had a game high 19 points and 14 rebounds and joined Millett on the all-tourney team.
The visiting Comets (9-6), ranked No. 11 in Northern California, did keep coming back and stayed in the game for most of three quarters. They closed to 48-45 with 2:03 left in the third period. CSM then ran off 14 straight points, half by Elzy, to take firm control at 62-45 with 8:42 left in the game.
Millett had seven points in the first quarter to help the Bulldogs to an early 19-12 lead.
Leon had nine points in the first half as CSM led, 34-28, at the break
Gabby Jajeh (Mercy, SF) had three more 3-pointers, totaling 16 over the tournament – placing her among the top ten shooters in the state from beyond the arc.
Contra Costa was led by Tynisha Adams with 17 points. Also contributing were all-tourney selections Julian Robinson (15 points) and Daizah Pounds (11)
It was CSM's first title in the annual holiday tournament since 2008.
The Bulldogs ran up a 21st century scoring mark in the tourney opener, surpassing 100 points for the first time in topping Butte, 104-78; then turned back Solano, 74-70, in the semifinals.
OTHER PLACERS:
Shasta took third place, defeating Solano, 49-41.
Sixth-ranked Diablo Valley won the consolation title with a 73-63 win over Santa Monica.
NEXT: Following the Christmas break, CSM returns to action Dec. 28 at the De Anza College tournament in Cupertino. The Bulldogs play Cosumnes River (2-7) in the 3 p.m. opening game.
