Second Half Run Lifts Mounties Into State Championship Game
NORWALK – The Mt. San Antonio College women's basketball team got a good challenge from a quick-start San Joaquin Delta College squad, but the undefeated Mounties remained perfect on the year in reaching Sunday's championship game with a 60-53 triumph over the Mustangs Saturday night.
Mt. San Antonio (34-0), the No. 1 seed in the south region, will face Chabot College (30-3), the No. 1 seed in the north region, starting at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
San Joaquin Delta jumped out to 19-11 lead in the first half and held a 23-15 advantage before Mt. San Antonio went on a 9-1 run to tie the score at 24-24 heading into the intermission.
The Mounties built on that momentum in the second half, building a 14 point lead (53-39) with just less than five minutes to play. That lead would be too much for the Mustangs to recover from and they could get no closer than the seven point spread at the final buzzer.
Mt. San Antonio would have a balanced offensive attack with 10 players finding the net. John'ea Thompson led the Mounties with 12 points while Sashanique Youngblood added 11 points. Thompson's game-high 17 rebounds controlled the boards for the Mounties and gave her team a 10 rebound advantage (55-45).
San Joaquin Delta saw six of its players connect from 3-point range with Selina Moore connecting on three long-range shots as part of her game-high 20 points. Marshanique Hall added 14 points for the Mustangs.
Mt. San Antonio, winners of two of the past three state titles, will be looking for its seventh state title in women's basketball to equal the record set by Ventura. The Mounties will face a Chabot squad playing in its first-ever state championship game.
