De Anza badminton remains undefeated and improves to 9-0
April 8, 2025
CUPERTINO - De Anza College swept the first round of the 2025 Coast Conference matches, following a convincing win against the defending state champions.
Tuesday's 20-1 home win over City College of San Francisco gave the Lions a 5-0 conference record - and handed the Rams their first defeat since April 27, 2023 (19-2 at DA).
Both teams entered the match with perfect records.
De Anza (9-0 overall) stands alone as the state's only undefeated team with five regular season matches remaining.
The Lions are led by sophomores Mailan Vuong and Jenny Thai - along with freshmen Makayla Than and Karina Chow (undefeated in singles). Pairings often include a combination of those four - in addition to freshmen Vivian Hwa, Trinity Nguyen, and Natalee Lam.
"We have a very deep roster, but still need to be a bit more consistent," said De Anza College head coach Mark Landefeld.
"While some of the team scores are one-sided, these are really tough matches - some decided by two or three points. These matches can go either way. We need to stay healthy and continue to push each other in practice."
De Anza's last three matches were against three of the favorites to reach the 3C2A finals.
The Lions spent Spring Break in Southern California, picking up wins at San Diego Mesa College (17-4) and South Coast Conference champion Pasadena City College (14-7).
