A pair of Vikings capture weekly honors
LOS ANGELES, Calif – A pair of Vikings – Tyla Arbuckle and Anastasia Marquez of West Valley College – capture this week’s California Community College Fastpitch Coaches Association Player and Pitcher of the Week after one tossed a perfect game and the other did it in the batter’s box and on the base paths.
Arbuckle of West Valley went 9-for-13 at the plate, hitting at a .692 clip. She drove in three runs and swiped eight bags. She’s already tallied 19 stolen bases on the young season – a mark that leads the state. That speed on the base paths helped the Vikings rack up runs as Arbuckle scored eight times on the week. The Vikings are off to a staggering 11-0 start to the season and claimed last week’s top spot in the North in the 3CFCA Coaches’ Poll.
Marquez, this week’s Pitcher of the Week, gave the Vikings a performance to remember in a 9-0 win over Mendocino. The freshman tossed the state’s second perfect game of the season – Ariel Nava threw a perfect game for San Joaquin Delta on January 28 – fanning 13 of the 15 batters she faced. No balls were hit out of the infield in the dominant showing.
Other Notable Performances
Angie Chavarria of San Jose City College notched three wins in the circle while going 5-for-12 at the plate. The sophomore took a no hitter into the sixth of her final appearance in the circle before surrendering a single to the first batter of the inning.
Anaya Togia hit three homers en route to a perfect week for Long Beach City College, including a win over No. 7 Mt. San Antonio College.
