Although its 36-game winning streak has ended, College of San Mateo’s softball team was still alive Monday in the California Community College Athletic Association softball championship tournament at Bakersfield College. Three home runs by Riley Donovan helped San Mateo slug wins in the first two games of the state finals on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, however, the Bulldogs were unable to hold onto an early 1 lead over defending state champion Mt. San Antonio College and suffered a 3-1 setback in the double elimination event.

Although its 36-game winning streak has ended, College of San Mateo's softball team was still alive Monday in the California Community College Athletic Association softball championship tournament at Bakersfield College.
That meant that the Bulldogs needed to end the year with a "new" 3-game streak in the rain-delayed tourney to claim the state crown -- starting with a Monday afternoon contest against the winner of a morning elimination game between Palomar and San Joaquin Delta.
San Mateo scored in the first inning of a wet Sunday contest with the Mounties. Aubrie Businger drew a leadoff walk, her 28th free pass (most by anyone playing in the state tourney). Emily McAdams reached on a fielder's choice but Businger was out at second. With Riley Donovan at bat, McAdams stole second base and kept going – all the way home -- when the throw to second bounced into centerfield. Donovan then hit the first of her two singles in the game. But she was left stranded both times.
Mt. SAC went ahead in the fifth on a 2-RBI double to left field by Clara Granado, who also lifted a sacrifice fly to left in the seventh for an insurance tally in the rain. McAdams (32-2) suffered only her second pitching loss of the year.
CSM (43-3) had opened the season with a 6-5 victory over Mt. SAC (43-5), also played in a tournament at Bakersfield.
FRIDAY: In a state finals opener Friday, CSM outscored Fullerton, 5-4, in extra innings as Donovan hit two home runs and Ally Sarabia and Amanda Ubois-Weitenhagen each added single blasts. Sarabia's homer to left in the ninth provided a walkoff victory.
SATURDAY: San Mateo scored a 5-3 win over San Joaquin Delta in Saturday's second round. Donovan had a 2-run homer in the third inning to put the Bulldogs ahead for good, 3-1, and Kaylyn Sterling added a 2-RBI blast in the fourth to make it 5-1. McAdams pitched both wins, increasing her state best record to 32-1 at the time.
State No. 1 ranked San Mateo upped its state-leading team home run season tally to 46 and state-pacesetting slugging average to .566.
