Team Stats
Sacramento City
San Jose
Bakersfield, CA - It goes without saying that you should make the most out of your opportunities, but few follow through like they should. That wasn't the case for the Sacramento City College softball program on Saturday afternoon as they turned two hits, a wild pitch, and an error into a 2-0 win over San Jose City College and more importantly survival in the 2019 CCCAA State Softball Championships.
Neither team had many opportunities on the day as there were just five hits and four walks given out between each squad. San Jose City, the #2 seed out of Northern California, had good chances in both the first and fourth innings when they had runners on the corners, but each time they came up empty. The best chance arguably came in the fifth when with two outs, sophomore Keelin Spencer stood on second base after a steal. Sophomore Kayla Rooney would hit a single to center field and Spencer would get the go signal at third, but unfortunately she was cut down on a throw by Panther center fielder Mackenzie Duval to catcher Jordyn Farren.
Sacramento City meanwhile bided it's time and took advantage of the most opportune situations. Shelby Lloyd would lead off the top of the fourth with a double to left, and then move to third on a sacrifice. A few pitches later she scored the game's first run when she broke from home on a wild pitch. Lloyd would play a key role in the Panthers adding an insurance run in the top of the sixth when she reached via an error, allowing teammate Duval to score from third to make it 2-0.
In the win, Lloyd and Duval were responsible for the team's two hits. Freshman starting pitcher Rachel Gordon (8-1) was the big hero though, going seven full, giving up just three hits, and three walks on her way to her eighth win of the season. For San Jose, sophomore Stefanie Troja (21-4) went down with a strong outing, giving up just two hits and a walk.
With the win, Sacramento City College (34-10) stays alive in the 2019 CCCAA State Championships and will take on NorCal #3 San Joaquin Delta College in another elimination game. UPDATE: THIS GAME WAS POSTPONED DUE TO WEATHER AND WILL BE PLAYED ON SUNDAY MAY 19th, 2019 at 10:00 AM.
For San Jose City College (38-6), their excellent 2019 season comes to a close.
