Walnut, CA - The Mt. San Antonio College softball program, hosts of the 2018 CCCAA State Softball Championships, were the first team to punch their ticket to the semi-finals on Friday afternoon. The Mounties jumped out to an early lead and slammed the door late against conference rival El Camino College in a 10-3 win over the Warriors.
The Mounties (39-7) couldn't have had a better start. El Camino (36-11) would surrender a single, walk, and single to the first three Mt. SAC batters. That brought sophomore Michelle Santiago to the dish. After hitting her first home run of the season yesterday, Santiago obliged again when she launched a pitch over the left field fence to give the Mounties a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth the Warriors would finally get some action going. Freshman Diamond Lewis got the rally started with a single through the left side of the field. After an error by the Mounties on an El Camino sacrifice attempt allowed runners on first and second, sophomore Ashley Machado ripped a double to right-center to make it 2-4.
Mt. SAC had a quick answer for El Camino in the bottom of the fourth. An RBI single by sophomore Carissa Felix made it 5-2 and a sacrifice fly by freshman Ciara Granado pushed the Mountie lead back to four runs. In the top of the fifth, sophomore Kimberly Calderon would scratch out a run for the Warriors with an RBI single to left field, but that's the closest El Camino would get the rest of the way.
In the bottom of the fifth, Mountie freshman Candace Haliburton scored a run on a Warrior error. Haliburton would contribute again in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI double down the left field line, while freshman Vicky Gutierrez got in on the fun with an RBI single back up the middle of the field. Sophomore Nicki Soto would drive in the game's last run on an infield RBI single that made it 10-3.
Freshman Briana Wheeler (25-5) would get the win for the Mounties, going seven strong, scattering five hits, three runs (two earned), and handing out a pair of walks. Wheeler also struck out six on the afternoon. At the plate, Felix would go 3-for-4 for the Mounties with a run and an RBI. Haliburton would also finish 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and an RBI.
With the win, Mt. SAC moves into the semi-finals on Saturday afternoon, and will take on the winner of the second afternoon game in Walnut between SoCal No. 1 Palomar College and NorCal No. 2 Sierra College. The semi-final match-up will take place at 3:00 PM on Saturday. El Camino College will move into the elimination bracket and take on Cypress College who defeated San Joaquin Delta College at Citrus College a few minutes earlier. That contest will take place Friday afternoon at 4:30 PM at Mt. SAC.
