SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Three more games, three more wins for top-ranked Cypress College, which ran its record to an unbelievable 32-0 while remaining perfect in the Orange Empire Conference.
The Chargers opened the weekend with a 10-2 win in five innings over No. 7 Santiago Canyon College on Friday, running their OEC record to 15-0, before sweeping Palomar College by 6-1 and 9-1 scores in a nonconference matchup on Saturday.
The 32-0 record is not unchartered territory for Cypress, which started the 2008 season 36-0 under head coach Brad Pickler before eventually finishing third at the state championships.
"Honestly I'm in shock. I never thought we'd be 30-0 but I knew that we'd be good. I love this team and I'm so proud. I haven't had this much fun in a long time and this is what softball is supposed to be," said sophomore infielder Alexis Zavala to Cypress College Athletics after Friday's win. "We always come out here and never let down. We want to improve in every aspect of the game. From the starters to the bench, no matter what, everyone puts in the effort and I think that is what makes us the better team."
Cypress did all of its damage against Santiago Canyon (21-9-1, 11-4) in the third inning, chasing starter Kristen Piazza during its 10-run uprising. Three different players - Sydney McCollum, Emma Walker and Val Romano - knocked in two runs apiece in the frame. Cypress had eight hits during the rally.
Destiny Vasquez picked up the win in the circle, allowing just six hits. She came back on Saturday at Palomar to strike out seven while allowing no walks in the opener. Walker homered, Zavala tripled, and Nicole Wise and Kianai Puailoa double. The game was scoreless until the Chargers scored twice in the fifth. A three-run seventh iced the victory.
Brienna Dunckel, Bailey Romano and Moriah Lopez each singled for Palomar.
Vanessa Ledesma upped her pitching record to 13-0 for Cypress in the nightcap, giving up just a run, three hits and two walks. The Chargers wasted no time taking control of the matchup, putting up a four-spot in the first inning, adding another in the third and then two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings.
Romano provided a highlight for the Comets (19-10), slamming a first-inning homer.
Cypress will try to keep the winning going when it travels to Orange Coast College on Tuesday.
