Harlee Donovan Takes State HR Lead:
CSM SB ADVANCES TO CCCAA STATE FINAL 4 FOR A FOURTH YEAR
Harlee Donovan finally got a pitch to hit and slammed her 17th home run of the season to reclaim the state lead as College of San Mateo defeated Sierra College, 6-4, and sweep a three-game Northern California Super Regional series. The Bulldogs landed a berth in the California Community College Athletic Association Final Four at Bakersfield for a fourth straight year.
After being walked constantly over the first two weeks of the playoffs, Donovan lined an inside fast ball over the left field fence just inside the foul pole, scoring Kristen Kowaki (who had singled) ahead of her, for a 5-0 Bulldogs lead in the second inning. Donovan has walked 36 times this season, far more than any other player in the state. She now has a CSM record 37 home runs over two seasons, leading the state both years.
--San Mateo completed a second straight season undefeated at home. The Bulldogs have now won 64 consecutive home games over a 3-year period.
Also starring in the second inning explosion was Kaitlin Chang, who doubled home Samantha Dean for the game's first run. Kowaki's single to right field later scored Chang.
Chang later homered to lead off the fifth for a 6-0 margin.
Sierra answered with a solo home run by Karisa Cobey leading off the bottom of the fifth. The Wolverines scored twice more in the sixth to keep it interesting.
Christy Peterson came in to get the final four outs for the save, although giving up a 2-out homer in the seventh before striking out Mackenzie Lockhart to end it. Starter Morgan Jones was the winning pitcher, allowing just 1 run over five innings, walking none and striking out a pair. She improved the state's best won-loss percentage to 20-1.
--CSM is expected to face SoCal No. 2 see Rancho Santiago in a first round state tournament game on Friday afternoon.
