PETERSON SINGLE GIVES CSM 4-3 SUPER REGION SOFTBALL WALKOFF OVER COSUMNES
Christy Peterson smacked a single into right center field to bring home Kristen Kowaki from second base with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning as top-ranked College of San Mateo took a 4-3 walkoff win over visiting Cosumnes River College in Saturday's winners bracket game of the California Community College Athletic Association softball super regionals
--San Mateo (40-3), the first team in the state to reach 40 victories this season, will face Sierra College (34-11) in Sunday's 12 noon regional finale. Should the Bulldogs lose in the double elimination tournament, an extra game would follow. Sierra bounced back from a 5-1 loss to Cosumnes River on Friday to win a pair of elimination games on Saturday -- 9-2 over Cabrillo and 3-2 over Cosumnes River. CSM defeated Cabrillo, 21-0, in a 5-inning opener on Friday.
--The Bulldogs have now won 63 consecutive home games over three seasons.
Samantha Dean pitched five innings in relief, striking out seven, to improve to 12-1.
San Mateo had led throughout Saturday's game until Cosumnes River scored a run in the seventh inning to tie it.
CSM took care of business in the eighth. Kowaki singled through the right side and Harlee Donovan was walked (for a state-leading 34th time this season). Peterson then singled Kowaki home to end it.
San Mateo had taken a 2-0 lead in the second. Riley Wells singled to the left side with two outs, stole second, and came home on a single by Kristen Kowaki. Consecutive singles by Donovan and Peterson brought home Wells.
Jordan Davis led off the third with a towering home run over the centerfield fence to put the Bulldogs up, 3-0.
Cosumnes scored twice in the fourth to close the score to 3-2. She had three hits on the day. Peterson, Kowaki, and Riley Wells each had two of CSM's 14 hits.
--San Mateo defeated Sierra, 3-1, in a non-conference game in Rocklin on March 24.
