CHRISTY PETERSON & RILEY WELLS LEAD CSM OVER CABRILLO, 21-0, IN OPENER
SAN MATEO -- Christy Peterson drove in five runs with her bat and pitched the final two innings of a 21-0 shutout of visiting Cabrillo College for top-ranked College of San Mateo in a California Community College Athletic Association Super Regional Softball opener Friday afternoon. Morgan Jones pitched the first three innings to improve her record to 19-1 (for a state-leading .950 win percentage). Each pitcher allowed just one hit.
--The 5-inning mercy-rule game was San Mateo's 62nd straight home win over three seasons.
Riley Wells had a perfect day of 4's Friday, going 4-for-4 with four RBIs. She had a pair of doubles and scored three times. Peterson was 2-for-2 at the plate with two doubles and scored three runs. Left fielder Kaitlin Chang scored two runs and had a great second inning over the head catch.
Opposing pitchers continue to avoid slugger Harlee Donovan, the state leader in home runs over the past two seasons with a CSM record 36. Cabrillo hurlers walked Donovan four straight times – including once with the bases loaded – increasing her state season lead in bases on balls to 34. Donovan scored twice, upping her runs lead to 62. Meagan Wells, who scored twice on Friday, is third in runs scored with 58.
OPPONENT/STREAK NOTES: CSM won an early season non-conference game at Cosumnes River, 9-5, on Feb. 20. The Bulldogs recorded their third victory of the season over Cabrillo. Previous scores were 2-1 and 10-0. San Mateo's current overall win streak is 16 games since a 3-0 St. Patrick's Day setback at San Jose (March 17).
