It took an extra inning effort but College of San Mateo's state top-ranked softball team has now entered a third year of unbeaten play at home. The Bulldogs wrapped up a FIFTH consecutive Coast North Conference title and won their 53rd consecutive home game, 12-9, over league rival Ohlone College on April 2 – the anniversary date of the last home loss, in 2014.
San Mateo (29-3, 10-1 Coast North) scored four runs in the eighth as Kristen Kowaki led off with a triple, Samantha Dean doubled, and Kaitlin Chang got her third RBI of the day with a single to highlight the frame.
CSM led, 8-7, going into the seventh, when Ohlone hit three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. San Mateo got an unassisted double play at second base by Christy Peterson, but Haley Keahi still scored the tying run from third to send it to extra innings. Keahi had five RBIs on the day (including a home run) and scored three times. She grounded out in the eighth, however, to end the game.
Samantha Dean (8-1) got the victory with 3 2/3 innings of relief work.
Harlee Donovan had a grand slam in the second inning as the Bulldogs took a 7-0 lead. It was Donovan's 12th homer of the season to lead Northern California (ahead of Keahi, who has ten). Donovan and Meagan Wells each scored two runs on the day and co-lead the state with 44 apiece.
Second place Ohlone fell to 7-4 (15-12-1 overall) and trails the Bulldogs by three games with just one conference contest remaining.
Note: This was Ohlone's originally scheduled home conference game, moved to CSM. Therefore the Renegades batted in the home team position. All games played at CSM are considered "home" games for the Bulldogs. That includes other games, including playoffs, where a visiting team may play in the home position in a second contest of a series.
THE STREAK: San Mateo's last home loss was on April 2, 2014, to San Jose City College, 15-9 – a team the Bulldogs will host in the regular season finale on April 26. San Jose is a current Coast South co-leader (at 6-3) and gave the Bulldogs their only conference loss since 2014, 3-0, on March 17 in San Jose. The return match is a non-conference crossover contest.
TEN TITLES: San Mateo has now won TEN Coast soft ball title this century: 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2012 through 2016.
UPCOMING: CSM's remaining regular season schedule has seven games. This week San Mateo hosts College of the Sequoias of the Valley Conference in a noon doubleheader on Thursday (April 7). An April 21 non-league date at another Coast South co-leader, Cabrillo, is the only road contest. The Coast North finale is on Tuesday, April 12, with third place Chabot at CSM at 3 p.m.
