Bulldogs Look For 52nd Consecutive Home Win Tues. March 29:
STATE NO. 1 CSM DEFEATS #10 SIERRA, 3-1, FOR 26TH SOFTBALL VICTORY
Morgan Jones won her tenth game as state top-ranked College of San Mateo defeated No. 10 Sierra College, 3-1, in a non-conference softball game Thursday in Rocklin.
Although Jones scattered three hits and struck out three in her five innings of work on the mound, there was one damaging blow -- a solo home run by Rylie Carlier in the fourth that gave the host Wolverines a short-lived 1-0 lead. That was the game's only extra base hit.
The Bulldogs (26-3) responded with two runs in the fifth and then added an insurance run in the seventh.
CSM got a pair of hits each from Harlee Donovan, Christy Peterson, and Meagan Wells. Samantha Dean, who pitched the final two innings for her second save, also hit a single for San Mateo's only RBI. Jones is now 10-1 and ranks No. 5 in the state with a 0.86 earned run average.
Sierra, which was looking for its 20th win, fell to 19-6.
San Mateo remains the winningest (26) among the state's 82 community college teams after two victories this week – including a 19-0 Coast Conference triumph at Gavilan College on Tuesday.
GAVILAN RECAP: Meagan Wells scored four runs in the 5-inning, 19-0, win over Gavilan in Gilroy and ranks No. 2 in the state with 38 runs scored this season. Donovan scored twice to bring her No. 4 state-ranking total to 36. Wells had three hits and ranks No. 3 in the state with 43. Dean had three hits and two RBIs and scored four times. Kaitlin Chang and Jordan Davis each had four RBIs.
CSM SWEEPS NORTH'S OTHER TOP 5 TEAMS: San Mateo, also a unanimous selection as the No. 1 team in Northern California, has now defeated the next five teams in the regional rankings: No. 2 Fresno, No. 3 Cosumnes River, No. 4 Cabrillo, No. 5 Sierra, and No. 6 San Joaquin Delta!
LOOKING FOR 52: The Bulldogs will seek their 52nd consecutive home win (over three seasons) on Tuesday (March 29) against West Valley College at 3 p.m. West Valley (15-13-1, 6-2 Coast South) trails Coast South leader Cabrillo (6-1) by a half game. CSM leads the Coast North at 7-1 by 2 1/2 games over Ohlone (4-3) – which the Bulldogs play at April 2.
