TOP RANKED CSM SOFTBALL QUICKLY IN CONTROL IN COAST SOFTBALL WITH 9-3 WIN OVER OHLONE
SAN MATEO – Samantha Dean had three hits, including a double, and scored three times while pitching a complete game as state top-ranked College of San Mateo quickly took over sole possession of first place in the Coast North Conference softball race with a 9-3 victory over visiting Ohlone College on Thursday.
It took only three days of opening week for the 4-time defending champion Bulldogs (11-1, 2-0 Coast North) to move into their familiar spot in the league standings. It was the 45th consecutive home victory for San Mateo, which has not lost a league game since April of 2014. Ohlone (4-5-1, 1-1) had given Northern California's No. 2 ranked team, Chabot (8-1), its first loss of the year, 2-0, in Tuesday's conference opener -- while No. 1 CSM handled De Anza, 8-0, in innings.
Dean, a freshman out of Burlingame High, improved her perfect season pitching record to 5-0 Thursday. She got batting assistance from Christy Peterson (Carlmont), who was 3-for-4 (including a double) with three RBIs and scored a run. Kaitlin Chang (Capuchino) had a pair of doubles and knocked in three runs. Meagan Wells (Hillsdale) had two hits, one RBI, and scored.
The Bulldogs got all of the runs they needed in a 4-run second inning. Riley Wells (Hillsdale) was hit by a pitch to get things started and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Kacy Edwards (Burlingame). Meagan Wells singled home her sister Riley to start the scoring parade. Dean singled and Harlee Donovan (Half Moon Bay) walked to load the bases, which were then cleared by Peterson's double to the base of the leftfield fence.
TOP TEAMS ON TAP: CSM faces its toughest opposition of the season Saturday in a Sacramento twin bill at Cosumnes River College, playing No. 3 Cosumnes River (10-1) at 10 a.m. and No. 4 Fresno City College (7-2) at 12 noon. CSM was the unanimous No. 1 team in Northern California in the latest coaches association poll and also topped the state poll, ahead of defending state champion Palomar. San Mateo's next Coast Conference game will be at Chabot on March 1. The Bulldogs play the five teams behind them in the NorCal rankings over the next three weeks.
