STATE NO. 1 CSM WINS SB OPENERS, 6-1 OVER MERCED, 20-0 OVER YUBA
SAN MATEO -- Sophomores Harlee Donovan and Christy Peterson led the hitting parade as College of San Mateo's top-ranked women's softball team opened the 2016 season by sweeping a doubleheader over visiting Merced College, 6-1, and Yuba College, 20-0.
It was the 300th win for San Mateo's current coaching "trio" of head coach Nicole Borg and top assistants Toby Garza and Dale Bassmann. CSM, top-ranked in the state coaches association pre-season poll, extended two long winning streaks dating to April 2014: 45 regular season games and 38 home games.
Half Moon Bay high grad Donovan smashed a home run over the center field fence and a triple off the center field wall; also had five RBIs, four runs, and four hits. Peterson, out of Carlmont, had five hits and scored three runs. Freshman Alicia Ortega (El Camino) went 4-for-5 with three RBIs and scored twice. Sophomore Kaitlin Chang (Capuchino) and freshman Jordan Davis (James Logan) each scored four runs and had two RBIs.
The Wells sisters (from Hillsdale) had outstanding opening day performances. Sophomore Riley Wells had a pair of doubles and RBIs and scored three times. Freshman Meagan Wells debuted with four hits, four RBIs, and three runs.
Freshman pitcher Morgan Jones, out of Half Moon Bay High, got the win against Merced, allowing just two hits over six innings and a single run in the second inning.
Samantha Dean from Burlingame High debuted against Yuba, striking out five in four innings while walking just one player and allowing two hits.
NEXT: CSM plays its first road game Tuesday (Feb. 2) at Modesto JC at 3 p.m. The Bulldogs return home on Friday (Feb. 5) to host College of the Siskiyous at 3 p.m. They will play a doubleheader on the road on Saturday (Feb. 6) in Gilroy, facing Siskiyous again at noon and then meeting host Gavilan College at 2 p.m.
