A PERFECT 35-0 SOFTBALL CAMPAIGN?
UNBEATEN TARGET FOR NO. 1 CSM IN TUESDAY FINALE WITH VISITING FOOTHILL
34-0 and ONE game away from its first unbeaten regular season: So 35-0 is the target for College of San Mateo's top-ranked softball team entering Tuesday's (April 21) finale with visiting Foothill College at 3 p.m.
CSM remains a unanimous No. 1 selection among the state's 80 community college teams in voting by coaches. Trailing on the list are No. 2 Palomar (27-3-1), No. 3 Cypress (28-8), plus co-No. 4 Diablo Valley (27-7) and Allan Hancock (29-2-1). San Mateo will host a first round state playoff regional series on Saturday and Sunday, May 2-3. (Playoff brackets will be determined on Saturday, April 25.)
The Bulldogs moved to 15-0 in Coast North Conference play with last week's 16-0 victory at Chabot College in Hayward.
Lauren Berriatua pitched three perfect innings with five strikeouts for her 22nd win, lowering her state-leading ERA to 0.29. Berriatua combined with unbeaten teammate Lacie Crawford (No. 5 in the state with a 1.43 ERA) for the shutout. It was a perfect game into the mercy rule ending fifth inning when Crawford issued a walk. Crawford struck out four in two frames of relief.
Berriatua, a sophomore out of Notre Dame (Belmont) also starred as designated player, hitting a pair of doubles for three RBIs. She ranks No. 5 in state batting with a .563 average.
Harlee Donovan hit a state-leading 17th home run and also had a double for her three RBIs to lead the state in the latter category with 66. She is batting .546, No. 6 in the state and ranks No. 3 in slugging at 1.102.
Kacy Edwards had her first round trip blast.
Melina Rodriquez, unofficially the state's top hitter at .606, went 4-for-5, including a double. CSM had five games trimmed from its schedule due to cancellations, so Rodriquez will probably not have enough appearances to qualify for the state batting crown. (She missed several games in March with an injury.)
Leilani Akai had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs and is batting .523.
Kayleen Smith had two hits and three RBIs. She ranks third in the state with 54 runs scored and ninth with 25 stolen bases.
--CSM is batting .442 as a team and slugging .718. The Bulldogs have hit 50 home runs and outscored opponents, 371-34.
