CRAWFORD BLANKS GAVILAN, 14-0, AS #1 CSM MOVES TO 29-0

SAN MATEO – Lacie Crawford gained her tenth win with a one-hit shutout as No. 1 College of San Mateo rolled to its 29th straight softball victory, 14-0, over visiting Gavilan College Tuesday afternoon. Although playing without the state’s top hitter and leading pitcher, the Bulldogs struck quickly for ten runs in the bottom of the first inning.

CRAWFORD BLANKS GAVILAN, 14-0, AS #1 CSM MOVES TO 29-0

 
SAN MATEO – Lacie Crawford gained her tenth win with a one-hit shutout as No. 1 College of San Mateo rolled to its 29th straight softball victory, 14-0, over visiting Gavilan College Tuesday afternoon.
 

Although playing without the state's top hitter and leading pitcher, the Bulldogs struck quickly for ten runs in the bottom of the first inning. State home run and RBI leader Harlee Donovan had a single and a double for three RBIs in the frame, after which Coach Nicole Borg rested her slugger for the rest of the game. Donovan has a state pacesetting 56 RBIs and 15 homers.

Leilani Akai also had three RBIs in the inning, including a home run and a single. She had hits in each of at bat on the day. The game's other hitting star was Christy Peterson, with two doubles and a triple for three RBIs, scoring twice,

Crawford allowed only three base runners, walking one and hitting another, to improve to 10-0, the second best won-loss percentage in the state behind teammate Lauren Berriatua (19-0).
Resting slight injuries during San Mateo's only game of the week were top hitter Melina Rodriquez (.625) and state pitching leader Berriatua (0.27 ERA). Berriatua is also CSM's No. 2 hitter (and No. 5 in the state) with a .559 average. Both are expected back for state top-ranked San Mateo's next game, March 31, at Coast South leader West Valley.
CSM, the only unbeaten among the state's 80 community college softball teams, moved to 29-0, 10-0 in the Coast North. Gavilan fell to 7-23 (1-8 Coast South).
San Mateo now has a 2 1/2 game lead in the Coast North -- ahead of Ohlone (7-2), which was upset by Hartnell, 3-2, Tuesday. The Bulldogs play at Ohlone on April 4.
Note: Sacramento City College has cancelled a scheduled non-conference game at CSM for Thursday (March 26).
