State pitching leader Lauren Berriatua batted and pitched No. 1 College of San Mateo to a school record 27th consecutive softball victory, 9-3, over visiting Monterey Peninsula College.
Berriatua went the distance on the mound, striking out 12. She is the state's winningest pitcher at 19-0 and also the ERA leader at 0.26. The sophomore out of Notre Dame (Belmont) went 2-for-3 as designated player, batting in a pair of runs, scoring once, and hitting a sacrifice. She also had CSM's only extra base hit, a double.
But Berriatua also gave up a home run for the first time this season – a solo shot by Lobos' centerfielder Samantha Luna.
After the Bulldogs had gone ahead, 2-0, in the third, MPC came back to tie it with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning. CSM finally woke-up with seven runs in the bottom of the frame.
The other San Mateo hitting stars were Christy Peterson, 2-for-4 with two runs scored; Brittany Wilkerson, 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored; and Harlee Donovan, 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Donovan leads the state with 53 RBIs, 11 ahead of the pack, and also has a state-pacing 15 home runs.
Voted the unanimous No. 1 team in the state by coaches, CSM is now 27-0 overall and 8-0 in the Coast North Conference. Monterey fell to 17-8, 4-3 Coast South.
