SAN MATEO – State home run leader Harlee Donovan smacked a fast ball over the left centerfield fence in the fifth inning to give No. 1 College of San Mateo its 20th straight softball victory, a 10-1 abbreviated walkoff over visiting Chabot College Tuesday afternoon.
State pitching leader Lauren Berriatua got her 13th win with four innings of 1-hit shutout ball, lowering her also pacesetting earned run average to 0.22. The sophomore righthander out of Notre Dame (Belmont) had nine strikeouts, raising her season total to 91. As cleanup hitter (slugging 1.089), she went 3-for-3 with two RBI's and scored two runs.
Batting third in the lineup, Donovan hit her 13th and 14th homers in a day of fours: going 4-for 4 with four runs and four RBI's (adding to her commanding state lead in the latter category with 46). The day's performance, which included a double, vaulted the freshman righthander out of Half Moon Bay High to the top of the state slugging ranks with a 1.436 mark.
