SAN MATEO - State No. 3 ranked College of San Mateo struck on quick long TD drives on its first two possessions en route to a 35-14 victory over visiting No. 17 Modesto JC Saturday afternoon.
Ezra Moleni rushed three yards and J'Wan Evans carried for nine yards for those early scores and a 14-0 lead. Evans later ran in from 19 yards out for a 21-7 Bulldogs advantage.
Quarterback Richie Watts was nearly perfect on the day, completing 18 of 20 passes for 291 yards, including an early fourth-quarter 16-yard TD pass to Colin Giffen to put San Mateo (3-0) in firm command at 28-7. Nate Sanchez ran 50 yards for the final Bulldogs score. Modesto fell to 1-2.
"We passed the ball efficiently, 90 per cent," said CSM coach Tim Tulloch, " and with no turnovers."
Linebacker Taniela Latu led the CSM defense with seven solo tackles, including a sack, plus a pass interception -- which he returned 15 yards. San Mateo totaled 473 yards to 309 for Modesto.
Moleni had 72 yards rushing and caught three passes for 38 yards. Sanchez had 70 yards on four carries and Evans 44 on 11 trips. Raymello Murphy caught three passes
for 71 yards and Jeremiah Patterson had three for 69.
--This was the third annual "Jum" Bowl, honoring Charles "Jum" Morris, the first president of Modesto JC, which opened in 1921, and later president of San Mateo JC (which is currently celebrating its Centennial year).
SCOREBOARD notes:
City College of San Francisco's national-leading 16-game winning streak was stopped by host Butte College, 35-14, on Saturday. The currently top-ranked and defending state champion Rams had not lost since a pre-Covid engagement with CSM, 45-31, in the 2019 Bay 6 League title deciding game – as the Bulldogs then went onto the state finals.
Since 2019, San Mateo has lost only to CCSF -- twice in 2021 (regular season title game and NorCal playoffs).
--CSM, in line to rise to top-ranking in Northern California, travels to American River College in Sacramento on Saturday (Sept. 24) at 1 p.m. San Mateo will host Butte on Oct. 1, in the last non-conference game.
The Bulldogs open Bay 6 play Oct. 15, hosting Laney, and will play at CCSF in the 2022 league finale on Nov. 12.
