CSM SMACKS DIABLO VALLEY, 42-7, TO SET-UP NOV. 14 BAY 6 TITLE SHOWDOWN WITH CCSF
Keenan Smith ran 65 yards for a touchdown on the game's first offensive play as College of San Mateo defeated host Diablo Valley College, 42-7, to set-up a Bay 6 title-deciding game with City College of San Francisco at CSM next Saturday (Nov. 14) at 1 p.m.
Smith rushed for 140 yards on 13 carries and scored two of CSM's first four touchdowns. San Mateo quarterback Dru Brown accounted for the other two early TDs on runs of seven and 12 yards. He completed nine of 13 passes for 124 yards. In addition to his 19 yards rushing, Brown caught a 27-yard pass from slotback Ramiah Marshall.
San Mateo's state-leading rushing offense totaled 316 yards. Meanwhile the Bulldogs defense corralled state passing leader Drew Anderson of DVC, limited him to 20 completions in 53 attempts for 210 yards and a lone TD with just nine seconds remaining. That ended CSM's 7-quarter shutout streak, however.
Anderson was sacked four times, twice by Sione Finefeuiaki, who had five solo tackles and one assist. Joshua Clarke had four solo tackles. CSM had 11 pass break-ups to limit Anderson's effectiveness.
San Mateo had 497 yards of offense to 292 for the Vikings. Marshall had another good all-around game, carrying three times for 54 yards, catching one pass, and returning two punts for 24 yards – in addition to throwing the 27-yard pass to Brown. Isiah Williams carried 12 times for 48 yards, including a TD. Eight players carried the ball for the Bulldogs.
Backup signal caller Bobby Calmeyn completed both of his pass attempts, including 32-yard scoring toss to Delshawn Mitchell in the third quarter.
There were no turnovers in the game.
CSM, ranked fourth in the state, moved to 7-2 overall, 3-1 in the Bay 6. No. 21 Diablo Valley fell to 4-5, 2-2.
--It was the seventh consecutive year that CSM defeated the Vikings. The last DVC win came in 1991, although the two teams did not play every year.
