After 6-4 Marathon, Bulldogs Take Decider 8-6:
CSM SWEEPS HOST FRESNO IN BASEBALL FIRST ROUND REGIONALS
Nick Adgar singled home Ryan Krainz in the bottom of the eighth inning with the winning run and also scored an insurance run on a wild pitch as College of San Mateo defeated host Fresno City College, 8-6, to sweep a 2-game postseason weekend series.
No. 6 NorCal seed Fresno (26-12), the Central Valley Conference champions, dropped the series opener to CSM, 6-4, in 10 innings on Friday in a 5 hour 15 minute contest.
The No. 11 seeded Bulldogs (25-13) advance to the second round of the California Community College Athletic Association baseball playoffs for another best 2-of-3 series, Friday and Saturday (May 13-14) – likely at No. 2 Cosumnes River College (30-9) in Sacramento.
--(That was pending Sunday's rain make-up, where No. 4 Cabrillo was leading No. 13 De Anza in the series, 1-0. A De Anza sweep on Sunday could, instead, pit CSM at Mission.)
Mark Quinby loomed large with the bat and on the mound in both victories. As designated hitter, he had five RBIs, two hits and two runs. The 6-0 freshman out of Valley Christian High recorded his seventh save in getting the final two outs on Friday and was the winning pitcher in relief on Saturday to up his record to 3-2.
Adgar, a freshman outfielder from Bishop O'Dowd high, did not start the second game but made the most of his entry in the eighth inning. Krainz had ledoff the frame with a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch before Adgar singled him home. Adgar then advanced two bases to third on an error by the pitcher and later scored on the wild pitch to make it 8-6.
Daniel Slominski came in for ninth inning and faced just three batters, getting two fly outs and a strikeout for his second save.
The Bulldogs banged out 17 hits in the two games -- four by Anders Green, who scored five times. RJ Prince had three hits and two RBIs. (The two games totaled 8 1/2 hours.)
