JANUARY STATE ATHLETES OF THE MONTH
Deajanae Harvey, Palomar College, basketball, sophomore, guard
Harvey was a dominating presence for the Comets in a 7-0 month for the then undefeated state #1-ranked team. She averaged 27 points, 9 rebounds, 7.7 steals and 5 assists during January. In a PCAC win over Cuyamaca, she poured in her season high of 43 points (hit 19 of 23 from the floor) and made 11 steals in a rare type of double-double. In a victory over San Diego Mesa, she just missed a triple-double with 33 points, 13 rebounds and 9 steals. Harvey led the state in steals, was second in scoring average, and fifth in assists. She was named SoCal Player of the Year in both of her seasons as well as 2-time PCAC MVP. Harvey served in the Army National Guard and had a 5-year layoff from competitive basketball between high school and enrolling at Palomar in 2021.
Terri Miller, College of the Sequoias, basketball, sophomore, forward
At 6-foot-8, Miller had a remarkably consistent, all-around first month of 2023 as he averaged 15.6 points, 11.3 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.9 steals and 1.6 blocks in helping the Giants to eight January victories. He reached a double-double in points and rebounds in all seven of the games he played. In a Jan. 7 win over Merced, he performed a triple-double on 14 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Against Fresno, Miller nearly did it again, finishing with 16 points, 13 boards and eight assists. A Co-MVP of the Central Valley Conference, Miller later made it to the 2022-23 All-State Team. He was a big reason why CVC champion Sequoias was ranked #4 in the state and reached the CCCAA State Tournament.
