Athlete of the Month honors bestowed on Dailey, Lee Loy

GLENDORA, Calif. - College of the Siskiyous women's basketball player Melissa Dailey and Sacramento City College wrestler Derek Lee Loy each turned undefeated Decembers into individual honors on Monday after being named as the CCCSIA/CCCAA Athletes of the Month, sponsored by Rally Factory.
Dailey, a sophomore for the fifth-ranked Eagles, was an integral force for COS which went a perfect 11-0 to end the calendar year while beating five teams ranked in the Northern California coaches poll's top 10. Shooting better than 53% from the floor, including a sizzling 57.1% from three-point territory, Dailey averaged 24.8 points, 4.0 rebounds, 7.2 assists and 2.5 steals. She also made good on 72% of her free throw attempts.
The Centennial High School product from Portland, Ore., torched then No. 9 American River for 32 points during a 96-90 at the Monterey Peninsula tournament on Dec. 16. Dailey also added eight boards, seven assists and three steals.
Lee Loy, a sophomore who joined the Panthers from Moanalua, Hawaii, also didn't taste defeat during December after rolling to a 7-0 record to win the 165-pound CCCAA Wrestling Championship after earlier capturing the Northern Californa Regional Championship.
Lee Loy was tabbed the Outstanding Wrestler at the state championships by the wrestling coaches and helped Sacramento City finish in third place. Not only did he excel on the mat, where he lost just twice all year, but he carried a 3.8 GPA during the fall semester to earn national All-Academic honors.
Other nominees for the women's award included Katie McLaughlin (Diablo Valley, soccer), Farrah Castillo (East L.A., basketball), Gionni Brown (Grossmont, volleyball), Kendra Williams (L.A. Trade Tech, basketball) and Destinee Bowie (Sierra, basketball).
Other nominees for the men's honor included Zach Copeland (CCSF, basketball), Jordan Hoy (Fullerton, football), Trevelin Queen (College of Marin, basketball), T.J. Shorts (Saddleback, basketball) and Anthony Smith (Feather River, basketball).
