MONTEREY PARK - Santa Monica's Risa Akatsu and West Valley's Marie Lucquet, Sierra's duo of Jake Reuter and Andrew Espinosa, and Orange Coast's Ethan Smith had highlight swims on Day 2 of the CCCAA State Swimming and Diving Championships held Friday at East Los Angeles College's Swim Stadium.
Akatsu picked up her second title in two days (women's 200 freestyle) as did Reuter in the men with his second gold in the 400 individual medley. Espinosa performed some magic in winning the men's 200 freestyle while Smith scored his second win of the meet in the 100 butterfly and had an impressive anchor leg of Day 2's final event in OCC's 800 freestyle relay triumph.
Riverside's Lorelai Carney is also a double winner in diving, scoring the high board title today. (Read details and top finishers in all the events below in this release).
Orange Coast built on its lead in the women's competition with a points high of 335, followed by Sierra in second at 241.5.

FRIDAY, MAY 6
Event #13: 200 medley relay: Champion--Orange Coast, 1:49.35 (Delaney Lewellyn, Yuuri Yoshikawa, Sude Yilmazturk, Journey Werner), 2. Sierra, 1:51.06, 3. Diablo Valley, 1:52.28. The Pirates beat the state's fastest time this year by a full second in winning this race. Sierra stayed close for the first 3 legs, but Werner's 24.19 freestyle anchor was 1.28 seconds faster than Sierra's Bella Katapodis and gave the Pirates breathing room toward the finish.
Event #14: 200 medley relay: Champion--Sierra, 1:31.98 (Evan Terry, Jake Reuter, Caleb Tracy, Aidan Thompson), 2. Diablo Valley, 1:33.96, 3. Palomar, 1:35.58. The Wolverines continue to impress in a strong near 2-second win. However, Sierra also got the benefit of a DQ to Orange Coast's crew to create a 40-point difference from the team that had been chasing Sierra in second place in the early team standings. Terry's opening 22.76 in the backstroke was a key in the win. Diablo Valley's anchor Sasha Gusev swam a 19.99 anchor leg that helped DVC reach 2nd.
Event #15: 400 individual medley: Champion--Marie Lucquet, West Valley, 4:42.04, 2. Anoushka Jaivesky, Fullerton, 4:54.66, 3. Laila Topinio, Mt. San Antonio, 4:55.32. Lucquet labored a bit early in the butterfly and backstroke as Jaivesky built a 5-second lead, but the Viking recovered in her best stroke--the breaststroke in leg 3 as she picked up an impressive nine seconds to pull ahead (1:16.54 total in the stroke). Lucquet picked up even more steam in the freestyle and won the race by 12.62 seconds over Jaivesky who held on for second. Topinio also was strong in taking third, nearly catching Jaivesky at the finish.
Event #16: 400 individual medley: Champion--Jake Reuter, Sierra, 3:56.65, 2. Matthew Simpson, Orange Coast, 3:59.81, 3. Ethan Umpornpucki, Cypress, 4:08.59. Reuter built on his outstanding prelims time and swam the fastest in '22 in this versatile endurance event. Reuter led throughout but did have some competition in 2nd place Simpson, who was the only other swimmer to eclipse 4 minutes this year in 3:59.81. No one else raced under 4:08.
Event #17: 100 butterfly: Champion--Kanyada Doughty, Hartnell, 57.78, 2. 2. Sude Yilmazturk, Orange Coast, 58.18, 3. Ryanne Bartolome, Cuesta, 58.45. Doughty beat her fastest state time at .06 and needed it to fight off an onrushing Yilmazturk at the wall. The race featured solid races by third-place Bartolome, and Camryn Bussey (Sierra)/Mia Lam (Ohlone), who tied for fourth in 58.80. Yilmazturk's final 50 yards was in 30.37 in trying to catch Doughty (31.07 second 50).
Event #18: 100 butterfly: Champion--Ethan Smith, Orange Coast, 47.28, 2. Andrew Leong, Orange Coast, 48.38, 3. Sullivan Moore, Long Beach, 49.99. Smith was the favorite coming in and he didn't disappoint as he swam the state's fastest '22 mark.
Event #19: 200 freestyle: Champion--Risa Akatsu, Santa Monica, 1:52.84, 2. Ruby Gonzalez, Santa Rosa, 1:54.85, Ensley Letterman, Santa Barbara, 1:57.73. Akatsu scored her second title of the meet with yet another state best '22 time in the event. Akatsu had the fastest legs in every 50, including a 29.78 final 50.
Event #20: 200 freestyle: Champion--Andrew Espinosa, Sierra, 1:41.09, 2. Joshy Peters, Sequoias, 1:41.17, 3. Timothy Godin, Palomar, 1:42.19. Espinosa foreshadowed his impressive speed on Thursday, and despite swimming from lane 7, he put in a state-best effort to win the race in a photo finish over Sequoias' Peters, who went hard at 25.84 in the last 50.
Event #21: 100 breaststroke: Champion--Rylee Beidleman, Modesto JC, 1:04.42, 2. Sydney Fortune, San Diego Mesa, 1:06.50, 3. Jillian Lambert, Sequoias, 1:07.40. The Pirates swimmer opened at 30.46 and never was threatened in winning in 1.63 seconds.
Event #22: 100 breaststroke: Champion--Srboljub Filipovic, Golden West, 56.08, 2. Aidan Cumming, Santa Rosa, 56.63, 3. Arthur Moraes, De Anza, 56.66. Buoyed by a solid first 50 (26.11), then the only under-30-second last 50, Filipovic scored a close win over Cumming and regular season top seed Moraes. Filipovic set the best time in the state this year.
Event #23: 100 backstroke: Champion--Ryanne Bartolome, Cuesta, 57.35, 2. Sude Yilmazturk, Orange Coast, 58.66, 3. Atiya Yuwana, Long Becah, 59.92. Bartolome proved to be the best backstroker of '22, beating her own best state top '22 time to win this title. Her opening 27.69 was followed by the lone under-30 back 50 in 29.66.
Event #24: 100 backstroke: Champion--Evan Terry, Sierra, 49.02, 2. Tatsuki Inoue, Orange Coast, 49.31, Justin Welch, Clovis, 51.06. Terry swam a 49.76 prelim, then outdueled Inoue in the finals. It was the Wolverine's sharp 25.52 final 50 that did the trick.
Event #25: 800 freestyle relay: Champion--Cuesta, 8:04.89 (Jensen Perry, Meghan Abbott, Anna Kreowski, Ryanne Bartolome), 2. Orange Coast, 8:05.12, 3. West Valley, 8:06.61. Strange things can happen at a state meet, but hard to find one more bizarre than when West Valley, leading after 350 yards, had a swimmer lose lap count and stop. It took about 3 seconds for the Vikings to get back to swimming, but in the confusion it allowed Cuesta (from lane 8) to outduel Orange Coast at the final wall by .23 of a second. West Valley settled for third. The best 200 splits were turned in by OCC anchor Giselle Quinonez (1:56.31), Cuesta's anchor Bartolome (1:57.03), and West Valley starter Lucquet (1:59.46).
Event #26: 800 freestyle relay: Champion--Orange Coast, 6:41.17 (Tatsuki Inoue, Andrew Leong, Matthew Simpson, Ethan Smith), 2. Sierra 6:49.86, 3. Cuesta 6:57.84. The Pirates tried for the state meet record, but came up 1.58 seconds short in an attempt to break the college's fastest ever mark at 6:39.59 set in 2018. The star of tonight's win was Smith, who won the 100 butterfly earlier in the day, and then fired off a 1:39 flat in the 200 anchor leg for the fastest split of the race and faster than the 200 individual free champion. OCC won by more than 8 seconds over Sierra.
Event #27: 3-meter board: Champion--Lorelai Carney, Riverside CC, 209 points, 2. Anahit Cholokyan 205.30, 3. Jadyn Reeves, American River 201.95. Carney performs the double title in diving as she edged both Cholokyan and Reeves in one of the closest diving competitions in state history. Carney's pivotal dive here came on her fourth try as she scored her day best of 38.4 points on a forward 2 1/2 somesault pike. Cholakyan, who was consistent in all six dives, scored her best on her final dive, 38.4 points for a back 1 1/2 somersault 1 twist free, but Carney's 37.2 point finale in a back 1 1/2 somersault 1 1/2 twist free allowed her to keep her slim lead and the high board title.
Event #28: 1-meter board: Champion--Ty Hunt, San Diego Mesa, 230.45, 2. Donavan Taylor, Palomar, 216.10, 3. Jake Nelson, Grossmont, 200.75. In an all-PCAC top 3 finish, Hunt prevented Taylor from a double title in winning the short board title. After falling behind on the first dive, Hunt fired on all cylinders with three straight 40-plus point dives. His third dive had the highest degree of difficulty (2.8) and he scored 44.8 points on an inward 2 somersault tuck. While Hunt collected the points, Taylor's downfall was a poor second dive (13.8 points). Taylor scored 44.4 on his opening dive and nailed 45.1 on his fourth try--an inward 1 1/2 somersault tuck. All three San Diego-based conference divers were the only three to score 200 or more points.
