College of Marin Men's Basketball hosted the Roadrunners of Butte College on Saturday, and fell by a score of 76-53. The physicality and the depth of Butte was too much for Marin as the visitors raced out to a big first half lead before settling in for an evenly played second half. The Mariners were paced by Sophomore Derek Morgan who led the Mariners with 15 points.
Butte controlled the game from the tip, as they moved the ball well and attacked the paint with ruthless efficiency. Marin hung close for the first 10 minutes, but as the half progressed, the Roadrunners lead grew and grew. After the first 20 minutes of play the scoreboard red 40-20 in favor of Butte.
Marin kept the fight going in the second, playing the Roadrunners much tighter than in the first. Despite their best efforts, the Mariners were unable to make any appreciable dent in the Butte lead, as it remained around 20 or so points for most of the half. The final score was 76-53 as Marin was unable to mount a comeback.
Derek Morgan did an admirable job for Marin contributing a double double on the evening with 15 points and 11 rebounds. He also had a very athletic block, swatting a Butte shot away from behind on the break.
Off the bench Freshman Garrick Sherrod showcased his shooting abilities as he knocked down three triples and was 5-5 from the free throw line for 14 points. The Mariners struggled shooting, but a pleasant surprise was Freshman Center Kevin Kahriman who made 2-4 from beyond the arc.
The Mariners are still in search of their first win of the season as they have 10 days between games. Their next opponent is a familiar one, as the Mariners travel to Butte to face these same Roadrunners on Tuesday, November 28th.
