Undefeated football teams lead statewide polls but City College of San Francisco is close No. 1
SAN MATEO – City College of San Francisco squeezed ahead of Riverside City College in this week’s JC Athletic Bureau poll of California Community College Football Coaches Association members. It was a narrow 2-point margin, 267-265. While CCSF (6-0) is the lone remaining National (state championship) Division unbeaten in Northern California, three SoCal teams are still perfect No. 2 Riverside, No. 3 Mt. San Antonio, and No. 4 Fullerton. Those 6-0 teams continue to receive differing views from voters.
The top nine teams are in the same order in the poll of sports information directors in the CCCSIA rankings. And like the JCAB poll, the teams are bunched at the top.
Most of the top teams posted solid league wins last week: CCSF, 64-3 over San Joaquin Delta; Riverside, 63-0, over Grossmont; Mt. SAC, 29-7, over then No. 15 Cerritos; and Fullerton, 27-14, over formerly No. 20 San Diego Mesa. No. 5 Butte (5-1) defeated Santa Rosa, 52-36, and No. 7 American River (5-1) topped Shasta, 56-7, in NorCal League openers. That set-up this Saturday’s league showdown in Oroville between the two top-10 teams.
Defending state champion and now No. 6 College of San Mateo (5-1) rebounded from its narrow 30-28 non-league loss at Butte with a convincing 66-7 Bay 6 League opening win at Laney College (with which they shared the 2022 league title). It was CSM’s highest point total since 2016 -- when the Bulldogs defeated a Sierra team, 69-20, that included current SF 49ers star receiver Brandon Aiyuk. CCSF visits Laney on Friday. CSM hosts Diablo Valley (only team to defeat the Bulldogs in 2022) in a Saturday clash of early 1-0 B6 teams.
In SoCal, Riverside visits Southwestern and Fullerton entertains Palomar in the Southern League. Mt. SAC jaunts to No. 16 East LA in a key Central League contest. No. 22 Allan Hancock visits No. 12 College of the Canyons in the Northern League.
