SANTA BARBARA - Left-hander Tyler Gilbert, a former SBCC baseball standout, threw a no-hitter in his first major league start in the Arizona Diamondbacks' 7-0 win over the San Diego Padres on Saturday night at Chase Field.
Gilbert became just the fourth pitcher in baseball hstory to accomplish the feat. The last pitcher to throw a no-hitter in his first start was Bobo Holloman of the St. Louis Browns on May 6, 1953.
Gilbert, 27, is just the third pitcher in Diamondbacks' history to throw a no-no, joining Randy Johnson (2004) and Edwin Jackson (2010). Johnson pitched a perfect game.
SBCC baseball coach Jeff Walker was attending the wedding of his former assistant Tyler Heil while Gilbert was flirting with his no-hitter in Arizona. Several former SBCC players were also at the wedding.
"Got goosebumps watching the last few outs," said Walker in an Instagram post.
He said he watched the last four innings of the game on his phone.
