Skyline's Julian Merryweather makes MLB debut with Toronto Blue Jays
SAN BRUNO - Julian Merryweather, a 2012 Skyline College graduate and member of the baseball team, made his major league debut for the Toronto Blue Jays after being called up last week and made the most of the opportunity by striking out the first batter he faced, Philadelphia third baseman Alec Bohm. Merryweather went on to strikeout two more batters in his 1.1 innings of work before striking out three more in his next appearance at Tampa Bay on Saturday.
Merryweather was drafted in the fifth round of the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft by the Cleveland Indians. The Berkeley, California, native was acquired by the Blue Jays via trade in 2018. He underwent Tommy John surgery in 2018, starting a long road of recovery that saw him pitch a combined 12 innings between the minors and the Arizona Fall League.
After graduating from Skyline College, Merryweather had an outstanding career at Oklahoma Baptist University with a 22-5 record over two seasons. The All-American had a career ERA of just 1.73 in 182 innings pitched after tying the second-lowest ERA in program history with 1.07 in 2014. He registered 208 strikeouts with the Bison.
