Falcons Take Series From Cougars

Taft, CA – After an impressive season-opening series that featured 31 runs in two games for the Falcons (4-1), the team headed south to Taft, CA, for a three-game series against the Taft College, Cougars (2-4).

The first game of the three-game series resulted in the Falcons' first loss of the season, 8-4. Starting on the mound for the Falcons was sophomore right-hander, Gavin Ochoa (1-1). Ochoa pitched 3.2 innings before being relieved in the fourth inning by freshmen right-hander Riley Houghtby.  The Falcons scored four runs (JT Waldon (2), Logan Sutter, Cameron Saso), on six hits with two errors. The Cougars scored eight runs, on 11 hits with three errors.

In the first game of Saturday's double header, the Falcons scored 10 runs on 12 hits while the Cougars recorded three runs on eight hits and three errors. Earning his first win as a Falcon was sophomore right-hander, Andrew Neil (1-0), who recorded 5 strikeouts in 5.1 innings on the mound. JT Waldon added to his impressive early-season totals going 3-for-5 with two runs, a home run, and two RBI. Sophomore second baseman, Oscar Navarez, went 2-for-4 with one run, and one RBI.

In the final game of this three-game series, the Falcons scored nine runs on 13 hits and committed two errors as they defeated the Cougars, 9-4. Earning the win for the Falcons was freshman lefty, Jack Bolton, from El Dorado Hills, CA.  Offensively, the Falcons were led by sophomore first basemen, JT Waldon, who went 2-for-5 with two runs, one home run, and one RBI. After 5 games, Waldon leads the state with 4 home runs and is 17th in the state (10th in NorCal) with a .560 batting average and a .607 on-base percentage. Waldon is also currently 3rd in the state (1st in NorCal) with 11 runs batted in.

Hitting his first homerun as a Falcon is freshmen catcher, Nathan Vargas who ended the night going 2-for-5 with two hits, three RBI, and a homerun. Wyatt Reginato also had an impressive outing, going 3-for-4 with one run, and two RBI. Reginato is currently 12th in the state (6th in NorCal) with a .588 batting average and a .667 on-base percentage.
