Baseball hands Pasadena decisive defeat in SCC opener

(Walnut, CA) In a high-scoring event, Mt. San Antonio College (9-3,1-0) cruised to a 24-9 victory over Pasadena City College (8-4, 0-1) in both teams' South Coast Conference opener on Tuesday, Feb. 22.

The Mounties jumped out to 5-0 lead through two, then exploded for 16 runs over the next two innings to take a commanding 20-1 lead through four. The Lancers rallied with seven runs in the top of the eighth, but it was too little, too late.

Several hitters led the way for Mt. SAC, including Brent Cota (4-4, 3 R, 3 RBI, 3B), Elijah Pelayo (3-5, 3 R, 6 RBI, 2B), Cristian Enriquez (2-4, 2 R, 3 RBI), CJ Ontiveros (2-4, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2B), Nin Burns II (2-4, 3 R, RBI), and  Art Ruiz (2-2, 3 R, 2 RBI).

Cota, Burns II, and Will Bermudez each stole a base in the winning effort.

Mountie starter Michael Flores improved to 4-1 on the season, pitching five innings, allowing one run, while striking out four.

The teams will meet again on Thursday, Feb. 24, in Pasadena at 2 p.m. in the second of three. The final game of the series will take place on Saturday, Feb. 26, at Mt. SAC at 12 p.m.
