FEATHER RIVER SWEEPS SHASTA TO END THE SEASON

QUINCY, Calif. – The Shasta College baseball team wrapped up the 2021 season with a doubleheader loss at Feather River on Thursday, falling 18-5 in seven innings and 11-4.

In the opener, the Knights put together a four-run fourth inning from Jaden Gorge's two-run single and AJ Davies two-run double but the Shasta pitching staff gave up five runs in the fifth and six in the sixth. Nicholas Newton had an RBI double, Davies was 2 for 3, Payton Jeffries was 2 for 3 with a run and Hayden Hill had a hit and scored a run.

Dylan Foster walked four and gave up six earned runs on four hits in 0.2 innings to take the loss. Both Jay Mendez and Joe Fox pitched in relief and gave up six earned runs each.

In the season finale, Davies' sac fly to left field brought the Knights within one at 5-4 but the Golden Eagles pulled away with a five-run eighth. Shane Taylor was 2 for 4 with a run, Keanu Mizuta was 1 for 3 with a two-run home run, and Davies and Mario Hernandez were both 1 for 3 with an RBI and a run. Jeffries received a no decision despite giving up two earned runs on six hits in five innings in his start. Justin Purdom took the loss, giving up four earned runs on four hits in 1.2 innings.

Shasta finishes the year 12-16 overall, which is fifth in the Golden Valley Conference. Gorge led the Knights in hits (36), doubles (8) and stolen bases (10), Davies (33 hits) paced Shasta with a .379 batting average, Mizuta had a team-best 20 RBIs. Shasta had four players hit at least .300 on the season with a minimum of 40 at bats: Davies, Gorge, Andrew John (.350) and Mizuta (.305).
