The West Valley softball team enjoyed a much-needed break in the winter weather with a four-win week heading into Monday's important Coast Conference contest against San Jose City. The Vikings opened last week with an 8-0, five-inning victory over Hartnell in the Coast Conference opener for both teams. WVC (12-5, 1-0 Coast) rallied past perennial NorCal power San Joaquin Delta 3-2 in eight innings Thursday and then did what they were supposed to do Friday with twin 11-0 five-inning wins over Lassen and Mendocino.

Against Hartnell (9-6-1, 1-1), the Vikings got all the runs they would need on a three-run triple from Isabella Gallegos in the bottom of the first. Rhiannon Underhill was in control throughout, striking out four Panthers and scattering three hits to earn the win in the circle.

San Joaquin Delta and West Valley needed an extra inning to decide Thursday's contest. The Mustangs (6-2) grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth and the Vikings were down to their final out in the home half of the inning. But back-to-back singles from Sydney Heming and Larissa Higgins set the stage for a two-run walk-off double from Gallegos. Shelby White went the distance, striking out six, to pick up the win in the circle.

Two runs in the first inning and three in each of the second, third and fourth paved the way for the win against Lassen (2-9). Abigail Desa, Chloe Wright and Heming each had two of WVC's 12 hits. Miranda Torres got the complete game win in the circle.

Extra base hits were the theme against Mendocino (1-12). Reyna Cruz ripped a one-run double in a three-run first, Dezmyre Cruz had a one-run triple to key a three-run third, and Chloe Wright's RBI double highlighted a five-run Viking fifth. Underhill hurled her fourth straight shutout, giving up just two hits and striking out six Eagles.

West Valley hosts rival San Jose City (9-6, 1-0) Monday (3/6) at Viking Field in a key Coast contest. First pitch is 3:00pm.
