West Valley managed only three hits Tuesday, but took advantage of them to secure a 2-0 win over visiting Cabrillo Tuesday. A large Sophomore Celebration Day crowd was treated to good defense from both squads on a perfect spring day for softball.

The Vikings (27-8, 12-2 Coast) wrapped up second place in a rugged Coast Conference loaded with three of the state's top ten teams: #5 San Mateo, #6 West Valley and #7 Monterey Peninsula. WVC and Cabrillo (20-17, 8-6) complete the regular season Wednesday (4/26) with a non-conference contest in Aptos. First pitch is 2:30pm.

Abigail Desa drove in the only run the Vikings would need with a 5th-inning ground-out to first that drove in Jessie Taketa, who was pinch-running for Kassady Alcazar, who had opened the inning with a single and advanced to third on a Cabrillo error. WVC added an insurance run an inning later on an Isabella Gallegos double to left that scored Emma Courtney, who was reinserted to run after Marissa Delgadillo was issued a walk to lead off the inning.

The Viking defense was at the top of its game once again, recording 10 fly-ball outs, including two to extinguish a one-out, bases-loaded Seahawk threat in the 3rd. Viking starter Rhiannon Underhill, who got the win, and reliever Shelby White combined to scatter five singles, issue a single walk and strike out four. In addition to Alcazar's single and the Gallegos double, Desa roped a ground-rule double in the 3rd.

Fourteen sophomores - Alcazar, Natalie Clevenger, Alaysia Clincy, Emma Courtney, Dezmyre Cruz, Reyna Cruz, Desa, Gallegos, Sydney Heming, Kaylee Ramirez, Bella Sweet, Taketa, Underhill and White - were honored following the game.
