The College of the Canyons women's soccer team lost its first game of the season on Wednesday, as the Cougars were downed 5-2 by a strong Cerritos College team at the Nike Soccer Community College Classic hosted by Ventura College.
Canyons (1-1) trailed by a two-goal deficit heading into halftime before Cerritos (1-0) was able to put things away with two late scores to earn the Falcons their first win of the season.
The Cougars were down 3-0 before freshman midfielder Angel Quintero scored for the second time in as many games.
Quintero's scoring play came via an assist from sophomore Amanda Balzer.
Canyons looked to seize the momentum heading into halftime, and followed that up with a goal from Sigany Brice three minutes into the second half to make it a 3-2 game. This time it was freshman forward Taylor Lopez on the assist.
However, Falcons forward Amber Whitmore would strike right back in the 50th minute, with her second goal of the game.
Cerritos would then add a fifth score in the 70th minute to put the contest out of reach.
COC goalkeeper Kianna Hemphill (1-1) took the loss, but was credited with eight saves in the game.
Canyons will next face Hartnell College on Saturday, Sept. 3, as part of the Nike Soccer Community College Classic hosted by Ventura College.
