In the doubleheader sweep of West L.A. College March 18, the GCC baseball team took over first place in the WSC South with the 17-5 and 10-5 wins Saturday to improve to 6-0 in conference play and 16-7 overall after its sixth straight victory.

Once again the offense took center stage as the Vaqs banged out 19 hits in the opener highlighted by four hits each by Jackson Benattar and Adrian Gonzalez and a grand slam homer by Joey Craig, one of 10 extra base hits for GCC in the first game. Starter Geo Hernandez and relievers Maximo Newhart and Brady Barbosa handled the pitching duties. In the second game, Barbosa returned to the mound as the starter for one inning and was relieved by Julian Jaramillo and Chris Lozano in the second game win as Ricky Perez, Benattar and Gonzalez had two hits each as Glendale notched five extra base hits.

GCC continues conference play this week with three games against Bakersfield College, Tuesday March 21 at 2:30 at home, Thursday March 23 at Bakersfield at 2:30 and Saturday March 25 at home at 1 pm. All home games are played at Stengel Field.
