The Santiago Canyon College Men's Basketball Team has been competing against top ranked teams in the state and coming away with close victories. Tonight was no different. The Hawks traveled to undefeated LA Harbor College on Wednesday and won 61-60 to improve to 9-1 on the season. SCC has built a reputation for playing uptempo basketball and being a high-scoring offense, but this game proved to be the opposite. Neither team was able to get a good consistent flow on the offensive end of the court and the game became a defensive battle in the second half. The Hawks offense in the first half was solid as they led 37-28.
SCC managed to maintain a 6-8 point lead most of the second half, until late in the game when LA Harbor cut the lead to 4. In the waning moments of the game, LA Harbor drilled a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 1 point, but there was only 0.4 seconds left in the game. After an inbounds pass, the Hawks were able to secure the 61-60 victory. Leading the way in scoring for SCC was Drew Yezbak with 17 points including 3 three-pointers. Erik Howlin came off the bench and contributed 14 points. Rounding out the double-digit scorers was Preston Sims with 10 points. David Agba led the team in rebounding with 8 boards, while Aaron Wadman dished out 4 assists and hit a clutch driving lay-up to give the Hawks the 4 point lead late in the game. SCC connected on 10 three-pointers for the game on 29 attempts and were able to hold LA Harbor to 1 for 19 from distance.
Santiago Canyon will be back in action on Friday, as they host Palomar College at 5pm. The Hawks will look to continue building momentum as they enter conference play next week. SCC is now 9-1 on the season and LA Harbor drops to 7-1.
