Eagles swoop into the Lair and snag a victory

El Cajon — The Grossmont Griffins fell to the LA Mission Eagles 9-3 on Tuesday, March 1 at Noel Michelson Field.

LA Mission (10-6) scored four in the fourth and another three in the ninth to secure the win.

Sean McGrew paced the Griffins (6-6) offense with two of the teams nine hits.  One of those hits was a flyball right down the left field line for his first homer of the season.

After McGrew hit his homer in the second, the Griffins added another run in the third.

Jake Allen walked to get the frame underway.  He advanced to second on a wild pitch and was moved to third on a Zavien Watson single up the middle.  Watson stole second to put two runners in scoring position.  Luke Denos followed with a single to third that scored Allen.  After a strikeout, McGrew walked to load the bases.  Sadly, that is where the rally fell apart.

In the sixth, the Green and Gold put another run up on the board.  Skyler Agnew began the inning off with a walk, one of six the Griffins coaxed out of Eagle pitching.  That was followed by a Ethan Caschetta walk, which is when the Eagles went to the bullpen.  After a soft pop out, pinch hitter Justin Cervantes singled to center driving in Agnew and pushing Caschetta to third.  Two batters later, Watson was hit by a pitch to load the bases up.  But again, that is where the rally ended.

Grossmont will be back on the field on Wednesday, March 2 to make up a game against Barstow Community College.  First pitch will be at 1:00 p.m. it will be the middle game of this homestand, as Imperial Valley College will wrap up the homestand with a scheduled 2:00 p.m. first pitch on Thursday, March 3 to open Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play.
