Canyons Sending Four Players to 3C2A State Championship Tourney

VENTURA — College of the Canyons competed at the annual Western State Conference (WSC) Singles & Doubles Championships April 1-3, with four Cougars able to qualify for the upcoming California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) championships later this month.

COC's full squad was entered into the two-day tourney, with players advancing to the round of 16 of the conference tourney also qualifying for the 3C2A state tourney.

DOUBLES RESULTS

In doubles action, Canyons entered the teams of Estrella Segura/Baylee Renfro, Frankie Spadoni/Izzy Leifheit, Em Porter/Bella Solomon, and Leilani Figalan/Nadia Godoy-Ortega.

Spadoni/Leifheit played to an opening round victory as the bracket's No. 16 seed, defeating the team of Cittalli Diaz/Dayana Albizures. However, they Cougars' duo then fell to the No. 2 ranked duo of Yoshino Fujita/Callie Tzab from Santa Barbara City College.

Segura/Renfro received an opening-round bye as the No. 5 seeded pairing but fell to the combo of Naomi Pavletich and Kayleah Sanchez from Bakersfield College in the round of 16.

Spadoni/Leifheit and Segura/Renfro will all advance to the 3C2A Doubles Championship Tournament beginning Wednesday, April 23, at the Ojai Athletic Club.

SINGLES RESULTS

In singles play it was Segura, Renfro, Spadoni, Solomon, Leifheit, Figalan, Porter and Godoy-Ortega all competing for Canyons.

Playing as the bracket's No. 9 seed, Renfro claimed a first-round win over Sofia Rusina of Glendale College. The freshman then continued her run on day two, taking a victory (6-3, 6-0) over Ashley Birch from SBCC. In the round of 16 Renfro suffered a loss (1-6, 0-6) to No. 6 ranked Hannah Kraft of Bakersfield College.

Porter logged a singles win over LAMC's Albizures in the opening round before being eliminated in a loss (3-6, 1-6) to Lola Tennison from Ventura College in the round of 32.

Segura received the benefit of an opening-round bye as the bracket's No. 8 seed. She then posted a victory (6-1, 7-5) over Donatella Biscayart from SBCC to advance to the round of 16. On day two, Segura was defeated (2-6, 1-6) bye Kailani Lua of Bakersfield College.

Both Segura and Renfro will move on to compete at the 3C2A Singles Championship Tournament beginning Wednesday, April 23, at the Ojai Athletic Club.
