Giants Power Past West Valley, Advance to NorCal Semifinals
VISALIA, Calif. – The College of the Sequoias women's tennis team continued its remarkable season with a 7-2 victory over No. 7 seed West Valley College in the California Community College Athletic Association (3C2A) NorCal Team Quarterfinals on Tuesday, April 8 at the COS Tennis Courts. The win keeps the Giants unbeaten at 16-0 and moves them into the NorCal Semifinals, which will be held Tuesday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m. at home, when they host the No. 6 seed Sierra College. Sierra College defeated the No. 3 seed Foothill College on Tuesday, with a score of 5-4.
Doubles Dominance Sets the Tone
The Giants swept all three doubles matches to take early control of the quarterfinal matchup. At No. 2 doubles, Summer Herrera (Mt. Whitney HS) and Mia Orosco (Dinuba HS) delivered a key 8-5 win, while Sadie Avila (Hanford HS) and Hannah Salazar (Tulare Western HS) followed with an 8-3 victory at No. 3. Ruby Zambrano (Dinuba HS) and Jaden Godoy (Dinuba HS) completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 1.
Singles Play Seals the Victory
Herrera continued her strong season play as she defeated Faith Son in straight sets (6-0, 6-1). Godoy followed with a hard-fought 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 win at No. 3, while Salazar came through with a strong 6-0, 6-3 performance on court five to help secure the overall team victory. Mia Orosco added a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6.
Coach's Corner
"Our women beat a very good and well coached West Valley team," said head coach Martin Herrera. "Summer and Mia really set the tone in doubles, and Sadie and Hannah followed with a strong performance. I was proud of how we competed across the board. All the ladies really stayed composed and executed the game plan."
Looking Ahead
With the win, Sequoias improves to 16-0 in team competition and will host the NorCal Semifinals on Tuesday, April 15 at 1:00 p.m, when they take on Sierra College. COS also has seven players qualified for the 3C2A Individual State Championships, set for April 25–28 at the Ojai Tennis Tournament.
