The Glendale College Vaqueros found success in both pitching and defense as they walked away winners 2-1 against Western State Conference Northern Division rival, the Oxnard College Condors on Tuesday, March 4. They were rained out at Bakersfield Thursday, March 6 andare 7-8 this season
Freshmen Annaliese Ruiz went the distance in the circle allowing just one run with three strikeouts, enroute to her sixth overall victory. But it was sophomore Nazzelli Zohrabian, who led the way with two defensive gems in right field (a line drive grab on the run with a head's up throw to first to double off a runner; and a hustle play to relay a ball from deep in the gap resulting in an out at home when the batter tried to turn a triple into a home-run). Zohrabian also had a two-hit performance at the plate. The other defensive standout was sophomore Tati Pisa, who was flawless in ten total chances at short stop with seven assists and three put-outs, including a diving tag of a runner caught in a rundown to end the game.
Freshman designated player Isabelle Mendoza registered her second triple of the year as she sparked the offense in the fourth inning. She would later score on a base hit from freshmen first baseman Valerie Juarez. Sophomore second baseman Emma Mendoza gave the Vaqueros the lead on an RBI fielder's choice scoring freshman catcher Jeyslen Orial, who had reached base earlier with a perfectly executed bunt single.
The Vaqueros will next see action in their first scheduled Western State Conference Southern Division contest against the host Citrus College Owls on Tuesday, March 11 - with their first home WSC contest against the Antelope Valley College Marauders on Thursday, March 13. All conference games are scheduled to start at 2:30. Check the website for the latest in scheduling information - because rain is in the forecast.
