A 67-62 loss to Citrus College Feb. 21 for the WSC South Champion GCC Women's Basketball Team should in no way diminish what the team has accomplished this season. They had an overall regular season record of 23-4, a 13-1 conference mark that earned them a 6th straight WSC South title and a No. 5 ranking in the state polls.
But while being on the winning side of one-sided victories and close class throughout the season, the Lady Vaqs could not overcome a motivated Owls squad that was seeking to avenge a 57-55 overtime loss Jan. 25. Freshman Shadel Ffrench broke her own school record of 22 rebounds set earlier this season with 26 against Citrus to go along with eight points. Sammy Velasquez led GCC in scoring with 19 points, Shushan Krikorian added 13 and Malia Ulery and Lisette Meza had 11 points and six assists each.
Glendale plays next in the Southern California Regional Playoffs with a home game Saturday, March 1 at 7 pm against the winner of the play-in game between Cuesta and San Diego Mesa Colleges on Wednesday Feb. 26. GCC is seeded No. 4 in the playoffs.
