The Long Beach City College baseball team battled but ultimately fell to LA Valley College 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon.
After an early solo home run by LA Valley in the first inning, the Vikings responded in the fourth when second baseman Alejandro Rosas delivered a clutch RBI single to center field, driving in designated hitter Aaron Mingo and tying the game 1-1.
However, LA Valley regained the lead with another solo homer in the fifth and added two more unearned runs in the sixth to extend their advantage to 4-1.
"We were more competitive today then we have been," said Head Coach Casey Crook. "Our pitching was good, but we still have a lot of work to do on offense. That will be our main focus here moving forward."
On the mound, Thomas Adair (0-1) took the loss after throwing six innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out four. Cesar Corrales was strong in relief, tossing two scoreless innings with two strikeouts and two walks. Adrian Arellano closed out the game, allowing just one hit and striking out one in the ninth.
"Overall, I thought we played better today than we have been," said Adair. "It's a step in the right direction. We're still getting there offensively, but we made big strides today defensively. We got to keep working every day and that's all we really can do."
The Vikings look to bounce back on Friday, January 30 as they host LA Pierce at 2 p.m.
