Softball Takes Down Rio Hondo 8-5 in Conference Action

The No. 15 Long Beach City College Vikings defeated the Rio Hondo College Roadrunners 8-5 on Friday afternoon at Mayfair Park. With the win, the Vikings are 7-5 overall and 4-3 in the South Coast Conference.

Sophomore pitcher Daisy Torres (3-4) took the win in the circle as she only allowed two runs on five hits, while tossing out three in six innings of work.

The Roadrunners were first on the board with three runs in the top of the first inning. Then in the bottom of the first, the Vikings got to work with an RBI tripl from sophomore shortstop powerhouse Jade Wittman to score in sophomore centerfielder Yazmin Zendejas. The freshman catcher Ayanna Gamble blasted a single to score in Whitman to only trail the Roadrunners by one. Sophomore designated player Joette Vega then doubled to score in Gamble to tie the game 3-3.

The Vikings kept the hits coming as Wittman belted an RBI double to score in sophomore left fielder Savannah Headley to take the lead away from the Roadrunners 4-3. Wittman is untouchable as she leads the conference with a .700 batting average.

Headley hit an RBI single to score in freshman fist baseman Mya Logan in the bottom of the third inning to keep the 5-3 lead. Then Zendejas smashed a triple for two RBI to bring the Vikings up to seven runs.

The Vikings allowed the Roadrunners to two more unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and then scored one more from Gamble in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game with the 8-5 win.

The No. 15 Vikings will return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at Cerritos College at 3 p.m.
