First halves sink Rams in losses at Laney

The City College of San Francisco women's water polo team suffered a pair of competitive losses at the Coast Crossover Tournament on Friday at Laney College. The Rams opened the day with a 15-6 loss to host Laney and closed out action with an 18-12 defeat by De Anza College.

In both games, the Rams fell behind early and couldn't recover.

A 5-0 second-quarter by Laney turned a close 3-2 contest into an 8-3 halftime advantage. Zoellen Eichen and Melanie Lazaro both scored two goals each to the Rams on offense while Samantha McEvoy totaled 12 saves in goal.

Against De Anza, San Francisco trailed 6-2 after the first quarter and was down 11-4 at halftime. But the Rams were able to score four times over the final two periods to make the final score much closer.

Lazaro scored a season-high four goals while Eichen and Melanie Beavan-Szabo scored three times each. Shera Campini chipped in with a pair of goal. McEvoy added 13 more saves, giving her 25 on the day.

The Rams fell to 0-3 and will look to earn their first win on Wednesday (Oct. 6) at 3 p.m. when they host Las Positas College in their Coast Conference opener.
