
The VC baseball team honored retired coach Don Adams Saturday at Pirate Park, then proceeded to complete a sweep of rival Moorpark 19-5. Tommy Castaneda had a single and a double, knocking in three runs and scoring three more while Caden Stillwell also had a pair of hits, including a double, with three RBI and two runs scored. Jacob Roa pitched into the sixth inning, giving up two runs and scattering six hits while fanning four Raiders to pick up the win.
The Pirates opened the game with a two-run first inning. Henry Borjas and Matthew Ramirez hit consecutive singles to lead off the frame, with Borjas scoring from third on a wild pitch on the next at-bat. Ramirez moved to third on a passed ball before scoring on Grant Rodriguez's groundout to shortstop for the 2-0 advantage.
A six-run second inning broke the game open for Ventura. Castaneda hit a two-RBI single to score Lucas Martinov and Frederico Tiburtini before Borjas knocked in Castaneda and Jacob Tostado. Rodriguez singled home Borjas and Caden Stillwell hit a sacrifice fly to knock in Rodriguez.
The Raiders tried to make a game of it with two runs in the top of th third, but VC got the scores back in the bottom of the fourth. Tiburtini had an RBI single to score Rodriguez and Castaneda grounded out to score Stillwell to make it 10-2.
Ventura ended all hope of a Moorpark comeback with seven more runs in the bottom of the fifth. Stillwell doubled in two more runs and Brandon Contreras also hit an RBI single. Martinov hit a single to score a pair and later scored. Peter Dufau also knocked in a run with a single for the 17-2 margin for VC.
Ben Drumheller singled in two more scores in the seventh for good measure.
VC will begin a three-game set at Cuesta on Tuesday Mar. 4.
