LANCASTER - They weren't must win games, but they were certainly much needed.
The Marauder softball team swept a pair from LA Valley College, 4-3, and 8-4, Tuesday afternoon at Antelope Valley College.
AVC head coach Cindy Vargas said her team played, "outstanding."
"We got two big wins today. The girls played outstanding defense and we got a couple of key hits when we needed them," she said. "These were very important victories for us. Of course, we have a long way to go and every win is important now."
The Marauders (16-16, 9-5) moved into second place trailing only College of the Canyons (22-9, 12-2) who remains atop the Western States Conference-Blue Division standings. The Cougars have defeated the Marauders three times this season.
AVC hit a total of three more home runs to add to its state leading stat, including one by Maria Acosta, Angelica Ochoa and Priscella Panizo. Acosta accounted for six RBI in both games and Erica Serfoss collected five hits on the afternoon.
Pitching, which has been the Achilles heel for the Marauders, was solid as Naelyse arcia had two of her best games of the season. Garcia pitched both complete games and allowed only five earned runs.
